To ensure that families and school staff participate in decision-making processes, the Department of Education requires every public school to elect a School Leadership Team (SLT). A consensus committee composed of an equal number of parents and staff, the SLT works throughout the school year to help the school administration develop sound educational policies that reflect the needs and interests of school members.
The SLT’s main function is to review the school’s Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP). The CEP is a document submitted annually to provide a needs-assessment of the school as well as objectives designed to address the identified needs. The SLT also reviews the school’s budget to ensure it is aligned with the CEP objectives. At PS8, the SLT also conducts surveys and listening tours to hear from parents and gauge what is working well and what needs improvement.
The SLT meets once a month at a regularly-scheduled time. All SLT meetings are open to the public, and families are encourage to attend. The meeting schedule is listed on the school calendar. For more information, please email email@example.com.
- Homework – The SLT consulted with school administration, teachers, and parents to revise PS8’s homework policy for the 2018-2019 school year. The new homework policy is research-based, developmentally appropriate, meaningful, and consistent across grade brands.
- Equity and Diversity – The SLT is working to support students, teachers, and families in embracing and celebrating the diversity of our community and ensure that all members of our community feel welcome and safe.
- Wellness – The SLT is expanding health education programming and exploring other wellness initiatives for both our lower and middle school campuses.
