MS8 Performs at All County Music Festival
Last weekend, 6th, 7th and 8th graders from MS8 participated in the All County Music Festival run by the Music Educators of New York City organization. The All County Music Festival is when kids from different middle schools across all five boroughs come together to preform as one entire chorus, orchestra, concert band and jazz ensemble.
The chorus rehearsed for a few weeks with three conductors from the Brooklyn Youth Chorus (BYC). They came in to see us once a week during lunch and then we would go to their studio once a week. It was an amazing experience to work so closely with these awesome professionals and they also helped us sound really prepared for the festival.
We had two group rehearsals with all of the schools, on Friday before the festival for three hours and another on the day of the festival for six hours. I know, it sounds crazy that we could all come together, hundreds of voices, and still sound good but we did! We worked really hard and our conductor helped us a lot by pushing us as far as we could go. I took a lot from this experience, I not only had an amazing time working with my friends on the challenging music but it was fun meeting a lot of new people also. In the end it felt great that all the hard work we had been putting in for the past few weeks had payed off.
I hope that in the future, knowing that the 8th graders will not be at MS8, the new 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will take over and work just as hard and sound just as amazing.

6TH GRADE SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS
During Ms. Stumme’s class we did hands-on work! It was amazing because we got to do it with a partner.
We were measuring the Mass of objects. The definition of Mass is: how much matter is inside of an object. Each partnership was given objects on a tray: a set of watercolor paints, a book, a small and a large paint brush, scissors, a colored pencil, a marker and a ruler. All of these things were put on a triple beam balance scale that gave us the Mass in grams. After that, we could measure anything we wanted! Some people even got to find the Mass of their cellphones!
Overall, it was really fun and everyone wanted to do it again!

MS8’s first Exploration of the 2016-17 school year just wrapped up with Thursday night’s Exploration Exposition which packed the halls of our middle school. Exploration brings the entire school together for a two week period as each grade focuses on a specific topic across all classes. This massive undertaking requires a great deal of planning and commitment from the teachers and staff at MS8 who organized thought provoking and notable guest speakers, educational and fun field trips and insightful, creative individual and group projects on display at last night’s exposition. We appreci8 our amazing teachers and staff at MS8 every day and are especially appreciative of this undertaking, one of the unique learning opportunities which makes MS8 so gr8!
Visit PS8 PTA’s Facebook page for photos from last night’s exposition, read about the 6th grade’s Exploration and keep a look out on our blog for stories about the 7th & 8th grade Explorations coming soon.
