In 2015, the Garden Committee began collaborating with physical education teachers as the School Wellness Council to incorporate a broader array of wellness initiatives into PS 8’s programming. In 2017, the Wellness Council became a separate subcommittee of the SLT in order to better develop health and wellness education at PS 8/MS 8.
In 2018, PS 8/MS 8 was recognized as the citywide winner of the Kathleen Grimm School Wellness Council of the Year Award for its work growing the MS 8 health education program (read more here).
This year, in addition to continuing to support a strong health education program, the Wellness Council is focusing on expanded garden and nutrition programming, after-school sports teams, and student support groups — starting with a Genders and Sexualities Alliance at MS 8, funded by a DOE grant to support student-led diversity clubs. The Wellness Council also received an Office of School Wellness continuation grant, which will support coaches for the MS 8 basketball teams.
