In 2015, the Garden Committee began collaborating with physical education teachers as the School Wellness Council to incorporate a broader array of wellness initiatives into PS8’s programming. In 2017, the Wellness Council became a separate subcommittee of the SLT in order to better develop health and wellness education at PS8/MS8.
In 2018, PS8/MS8 was recognized as the citywide winner of the Kathleen Grimm School Wellness Council of the Year Award for its work growing the MS8 health education program (read more here).
This year, in addition to continuing to support a strong health education program, the Wellness Council is focusing on expanded garden and nutrition programming, after-school sports teams, and student support groups — starting with a Genders and Sexualities Alliance at MS8. The Wellness Council received an Office of School Wellness continuation grant, which will support coaches for the MS8 basketball team.
