This year’s Read-A-Thon will run from Monday, October 22 – Friday, November 2. During this great event, students challenge themselves to read as much as they can while raising money for our school. In previous years, students raised almost $50,000 through the generosity of their parents, extended families, friends, and local businesses. We hope to do even better this year!
Here’s how it works: every PS8 student participates in the Read-A-Thon. Parents, family, and friends can sponsor a student either per minute or as a fixed donation. Since the Read-A-Thon is shorter this year to allow space for all our great events, fixed donations are encouraged.
Each day, students record the minutes they read outside the classroom on their reading logs. They can read books, magazines, graphic novels — you name it. Even reading homework counts! Kindergarten and 1st grade students may include minutes that adults read to them.
On Friday, October 26 and Friday, November 2, students bring their reading logs to school so that parent volunteers can tally minutes and distribute milestone buttons to those reaching reading goals. At the end of the Read-A-Thon, the class in each grade that has read the most will earn a class party of their choosing!
When the Read-A-Thon is over, students hand in their reading logs and collect pledges from their sponsors. Pledged donations can be paid online or by check made out to PTA of PS8.
