We partner with STUDIO in a School to provide kindergarten and 1st grade students with high-quality visual arts experiences facilitated by a professional artist. The fourteen-week residency makes meaningful connections to the curriculum while encouraging students to meet intellectual and artistic challenges. Students develop the confidence to envision an idea, problem solve, make independent choices, and hone their technical and expressive abilities. Each residency includes an initial planning meeting, a professional development workshop, ten weeks of student instruction, and a final art exhibition.
STUDIO in a School residencies have been a part of the PS8 curriculum since 2004. Art educator and painter Belinda Blum has been the teaching artist at PS8 since 2006. Examples of past projects include fairy tale creatures, collage portraits, weather patterns, landscapes, tree collages, and printmaking.
STUDIO in a School was founded in 1977 to foster the creative and intellectual development of NYC children and youth through visual arts programs directed by professional artists and aligned with the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Visual Arts. The program’s vision is for students to have early and sustained experiences in the visual arts to help them achieve greater academic and personal success throughout their lives.
