We partner with Chess NYC to provide engaging, accelerated instruction to all second and third graders. Students receive chess lessons in their classroom once a week for at least ten weeks. Instruction covers all the basic rules of chess – how the pieces move, how to force check and checkmate, castling – as well as basic strategies and tactics, checkmate patterns, and opening moves.
Chess has proven intellectual benefits. It can help students improve their critical thinking skills, their ability to strategize, their memory, and their recognition of patterns. And while chess has an obvious relationship to mathematics and spatiality, studies have shown that it also improves literacy and reading scores. PS8’s chess program emphasizes the social aspect of the game, particularly good sportsmanship. Students learn to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat, to shake hands before and after a game, and to learn from their mistakes.
