Lower School Academic Support
PS 8 has classes in each lower school grade that uses the Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) model. ICT pairs a general education teacher and a special education teacher in the same classroom. PS 8 also offers related services on-site – occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy and counseling – for students who have been evaluated and recommended for special services.
Intervention specialists may work with students struggling in any academic subject, as determined by the classroom teachers and by test scores. Your child’s teacher or other school personnel will contact you if they feel your child should receive this help.
Middle School Academic Support
In middle school, parents and teachers work together to assess individual situations, decide if it is necessary to provide additional support during the school day, and create a support plan as soon as possible. PS 8’s middle school provides a continuum of services for students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). Services currently provided by the school include Integrated Co-teaching (at least one class on each grade), Special Education Teacher Support Services, counseling, speech and language therapy, and occupational therapy. Services are provided as outlined in students’ IEPs.
