What is your background and education?
As a child, I moved around all over the United States because my father was in the Army. I have lived in Hawaii, Colorado, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Texas, and New York. I received my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Texas Christian University and I received my master’s degree from Teachers College, Columbia University in Learning dis/Abilities.
How long have you been teaching?
I have been teaching since 2000. I taught one year in Fort Worth, Texas. For two years, I taught in Ukraine as a Peace Corps Volunteer from 2001-03. After finishing Peace Corps, I came to New York City and have been teaching in New York ever since. Prior to coming to PS 8’s middle school, I worked at PS 198 in the Bronx and PS 503 in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. I am excited to be a part of PS 8’s middle school and to learn and grow as a community.
What is your favorite part of teaching?
My favorite part about teaching is developing a sense of empowerment in young people. My hope is to develop my students’ confidence to help them believe in themselves and encourage them to use their strengths and talents to make the world a better place.
What do you like to do outside of school?
Traveling is one of my passions because I love getting to know people from other places and learn about different cultures. Some of my hobbies include reading, knitting, and biking around the city.
