Cat DeWan received a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Psychology from Skidmore College and a master’s degree in General and Special Education from Bank Street College. Before coming to PS 8 in 2012, she taught pre-kindergarten for four years, kindergarten for a year, and 1st grade for a year.
Cat has always loved spending time with children. She has worked with kids since the age of 12 as a camp counselor, babysitter, tutor, and mentor. “When I was little I used to make my younger sister play ‘school’ with me,” she says. But it wasn’t until college, when she volunteered at Skidmore’s Early Childhood Center for four years, that she realized her professional calling. “When I am with children, I feel like I am in my element,” she says. “I love seeing smiles on my students’ faces and watching children who genuinely want to do their best when they come to school.” She adds, “It is so gratifying when I’m able to convince children who are discouraged about their abilities to keep trying until I see their confidence and success soar.”
When not at school, Cat can be found taking her dog, Truffles, on long walks through Brooklyn. She also makes time to enjoy local restaurants and “everything else that this spectacular city has to offer.”
