Last week Charis Sessa and Elavia Bello, two PS8 parents found an injured baby woodpecker on the sidewalk next to our lower school on Middagh. After consulting with a friendly dog walker they learned about the The Wild Bird Fund NYC’s only wildlife rehabilitation center, caring for orphaned, injured, and ill animals.
The mommies gently positioned the woodpecker inside of a paper bag and boarded the 3 train for the Upper West Side. The center promptly took the woodpecker into their care and promised to keep them notified on the little guy’s condition.

We are so fortunate to have a such strong school community here at PS8/MS8! We would love to feature other gr8 helpers on our website from time to time — drop us a note at communications@ps8brooklyn.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.
