Last year, our current 3rd graders planted the wild Amazonian-like kale that has overtaken our front planter boxes. After harvesting in the spring, the kale continued to grow all summer (thanks to our Garden Committee volunteers and the Y summer camp kids). This Tuesday they clipped and plucked an impressive harvest. Ms. Glenys went above and beyond her kale-of-duty and made her much-loved kale salad, which all 3rd and 4th graders got to enjoy during their lunch period on Wednesday.
Not to be outdone, 5th graders on the Green Team met-up with the unstoppable Rebecca from Brooklyn Bridge Park at lunch on Thursday, learning which plants in our front yard are weeds and how to handle them. They’ll be out there regularly helping maintain our new space and would love to share their knowledge with you!
If you’re reading this and would like to get your hands dirty, here’s your chance. Join us for our next garden committee meeting on Tuesday October 30 from 2:45-3:30 pm, lower school, room TBD. 3rd-5th graders are especially welcome to join the garden committee meetings after school on Tuesdays (Oct 30, and then monthly after that, exact dates, TBD). Can’t make the meetings? We have more planting and mulching to do on Friday Nov 2nd (potentially all day in shifts). Let all these ideas take root and we hope to see you soon. Questions, email the team: email@example.com
