After-School Play

PS 8 has produced student-performed plays since 2008.  In the first two years, students performed the original plays Soldea Island, based on an illustrated story written by the school’s drama teacher and Return of Soldea Island, written by a group of PS 8’s third, fourth and fifth grade students. More recent productions have been based on Shakespeare plays – A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2010, MacBeth in 2011, and The Tempest in 2012.   Learn more about the value of watching and performing Shakespeare plays at a young age.

The exact grades that participate in the school play and dates of the school play vary from year to year. Students generally audition in the fall or early winter, and plays are performed in the late winter or spring. Rehearsals are generally held twice weekly until about a month before the performance, when they become more frequent.

A local filmmaker made a documentary about PS 8′s production of MacBeth; watch a video about that film below, and read an article about The Tempest written by the show’s student stage manager.
